The most valuable thing in a pharmacy is not on the shelves. It is the person behind the counter who knows what the medicines do, how they interact, and when you should not be buying one at all.

At Chetu Chemist, asking is free. You do not need to buy anything, and if the honest answer is that you do not need anything, that is the answer you will get.

What our pharmacist can help with

How to take what you have been given. Prescriptions are frequently handed over in a hurry. How many tablets, how often, before or after food, for how many days, and what happens if you miss one, these are the details that decide whether treatment works, and they are the details most often skipped.

Checking what you are already on. Bring your medicines in, including anything bought over the counter and any herbal preparations. Some combinations should not be taken together, and some duplicate each other without anyone noticing. This is much easier to catch when someone looks at the whole list rather than one packet.

Side effects. What is normal and will settle, what is worth reporting to your doctor, and what means stopping immediately and seeking help. Knowing the difference prevents both unnecessary alarm and dangerous delay.

Whether you need a doctor. This is the question we take most seriously. Some symptoms need examining, testing or admitting, and no medicine bought at a counter will fix them. When that is the case we will say so directly.

Long-term conditions. If you are managing high blood pressure or diabetes, we can talk through why consistency matters, how to build the habit, and what your test numbers mean in practice.

What a pharmacist cannot do

We think it is worth being explicit about this, because a chemist that pretends otherwise is a chemist to avoid.

A pharmacist is not a doctor. Our pharmacist cannot diagnose your condition, cannot examine you the way a clinician would, and cannot prescribe prescription-only medicines. What our pharmacist is trained to do is understand medicines properly, carry out the tests we offer, and recognise when a problem is beyond the counter.

If you need a doctor, we will tell you. That is not us losing a sale. It is the difference between a chemist you can rely on and one you cannot.

Buying for a child

Children are not small adults, and dosing is by weight rather than age for most medicines. A guess based on how big a child looks is exactly how accidental overdoses happen, particularly with paracetamol, which is present in more products than people realise and is easy to double up on without noticing.

If you are buying for a child, tell us their weight if you know it and their age if you do not. Ask us to write the dose down. And tell us what else they are already taking, including anything from another shop.

Herbal and traditional remedies

People often do not mention these, assuming they are irrelevant because they are natural. They are not irrelevant. Several common herbal preparations interact with prescription medicines, including some used for blood pressure and blood thinning.

We are not here to tell you what to believe or to lecture you about what you take. We simply need to know what is going in, so we can tell you honestly whether anything conflicts.

What to expect from us

We will give you a straight answer, including when the answer is that we cannot help and you need someone who can. We will not invent a recommendation to make a sale, and we will not pretend to certainty we do not have.

If we do not know something, we will say so and find out.

When to just ask

It is worth asking if:

• you have been given a medicine and are not certain how to take it
• you are on several medicines and nobody has looked at them together
• you have started feeling unwell since a new medicine began
• you are pregnant or breastfeeding and unsure what is safe
• you are buying for a child and unsure of the dose
• you are not sure whether your symptoms need a chemist or a hospital

None of that requires an appointment and none of it costs anything.

Bring the packets, not the memory

“The small white one” describes several thousand medicines. If you want a useful answer, bring the actual packets or send clear photographs of them on WhatsApp, including the strength printed on the box.

The same applies to a prescription. A photograph of the prescription tells us the medicine, the strength, the dose and the duration in one go, and removes any chance of a mishearing at a busy counter.
